Bubbly To Knockout The New Year, Not Your Wallet

A Happy New Years is even happier with a flute (or 5) of sparkly champagne. But paying for the real stuff may get in the way of the things you’ve grown used to, like sleeping indoors. So Stephanie McKinnon McDade, my resident drinks expert, researched the top sparkling wines just for you. Now you can drink if not with dignity, then at least without getting a reject slip from the ATM.

Take it away, Stephanie!

Before shelling […]

Best and Worst of 2006 - Comedy

1491124895_l

2006 was a great year for funny ladies! Among the highlights:

The Break-Up Show, with Kimmy Gatewood showed us all how to take our heartbreak and use it to create. A great outlet for the frustration brought on by break ups, and proof positive that it truly was their loss.

Chicks and Giggles was once again a great showcase for up-and-coming lady stand ups. Hosted by Carolyn Castiglia, […]

Children of Men - Subtle and Brilliant
The Departed - Most Satisfying Ending of the Year
Casino Royale - Best Franchise Reboot
The Devil Wears Prada - Chic and Cutting

Best and Worst of 2006 - Theatre

Best

Company2450
Elizabeth Stanley, Kelly Jeanne Grant, Angel Desai and Raúl Esparza in the revival of “Company.”

1. Company
Once again putting musical instruments in the hands of his actors, director John Doyle applies his modernist method to the most modern of Sondheim’s works, and pulls it off in this sexy, chilly revival. Everybody Rise.

2. A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant
Wiseguy geniuses Les Freres Corbusier gave New York […]

Best and Worst of 2006 - Food

Best Idea For A “One Item Only” Restaurant: Mac’ N Cheese places, including
SuperMac (http://www.supermacnyc.com) in Chelsea and S’Mac
(http://www.smacnyc.com) in the East Village. I only wish they had better
product.

Best Vegan Bakery: BabyCakes (http://www.babycakesnyc.com) I wanted to hate
it, but it’s impossible. So incredibly good, you’ll think they’re lying.
Then you watch the bakers do their magic and realize it’s for reals. Good to
the last sugar-free, gluten-free crumb.

Best Food […]

Best and Worst of 2006 - Music

Best

This is Nora Jones? This is Nora Jones!

Best Artist Transformation: Norah Jones
Remember when Garth Brooks tried to push his alter ego in our faces? Chris Gaines was just downright creepy. The last artist I imagined would attempt the alter ego/side project was Norah Jones but that’s exactly what she’s done. And she’s done a mighty fine job. Norah put her “snore-a” music on hold to take on […]

Best and Worst of 2006 - Sex & Dating

Pathetic!

Best:
1. The upswing in text messaging making non-confrontational flirtation extremely accessible to nerds and cool kids alike
2. The Myspace “comment” which is the new equivalent to placing your hand on someone’s thigh under the table
3. Kiefer Sutherland winning the Emmy for his portrayal of Jack Bauer on “24″. Finally, a panel of experts acknowleged that screaming in people’s faces, being immortal, and never sleeping/eating/peeing is quite possibly the […]

Best and Worst of 2006

We wanted to do a nice short year end Best and Worst list, but it turns out we had too much to say. It was a pretty big year full of democratic power, celebrity break-ups & vaginas, the death of pointy shoes, our vice president shooting someone and still staying in office, and acording to TIME we all got famous. Way too much for one little list.
So instead, we’ve got a bunch of lists for you to enjoy all […]

Natasha Levinger - Writer, Person, Blogger of the Week

Natasha Levinger has a mustache made of ice cream.

I don’t care what anyone says - pictures of cats are always going to get me to like a blog more. Frankly, I think more people agree with me than don’t. AND, those who claim to disagree are lying and secretly DO love pictures of cats. Give in, people: you love cat pictures.

Natasha Levinger doesn’t only rely on cat pictures in her blog […]
