Best and Worst of 2006 - Comedy

2006 was a great year for funny ladies! Among the highlights:

The Break-Up Show, with Kimmy Gatewood showed us all how to take our heartbreak and use it to create. A great outlet for the frustration brought on by break ups, and proof positive that it truly was their loss.

Chicks and Giggles was once again a great showcase for up-and-coming lady stand ups. Hosted by Carolyn Castiglia, this show provided a stage for local funny females, and we know it will continue to do so in the new year. Thanks for the giggles, chicks!

Stickerbook once again amazed and entertained with their unique sound, kick-ass outfits, and all-around awesomeness. Great covers, really great mash-ups, and really really great originals. Keep an eye out for these guys in 2007. I have a feeling that they will continue to grow, not just as a comedic act, but also as a band. I’m hoping for an LP in the coming year!

As for the worst of 2006, well, I expected a lot more laughs from Tom and Katie’s marriage.

My top three best comedy discoveries of the year are:

1. Adira Amram is awesome! Her songs are super catchy and funny, and her outfits are the coolest. Equal parts comedy, performance art, and pop music - she never fails to make me giggle.

2. Stand-up comedian Carolyn Castiglia can fucking freestyle like a motherfucker! I had no idea! Her victory at The BEATdown and subsequent performances at Ars Nova (the Mixtape Vol. II, and the Ars Nova Holiday Party & Show) were all very impressive and really, really funny.

3. I like Kathy Griffin. She’s hilarooroo! I REALLY did not see this one coming. She seems less mean these days, but still equally honest. Unless you count extensive plastic surgery as lying, but let’s not nit pick.
