Booooo!

This is the new Mary Jane figurine. You know, MJ - Spiderman’s tough, spunky, independent, international model wife. But apparently she’s now being reimagined as Peter Parker’s laundry whore.
Mary Jane has long been an important character to comicbook fan-girls - she was a female character we could like and identitfy with. Like Lois Lane, she became so popular that she even got her own title - but unlike Lois, her boyfriend wasn’t a boring jock (instead he was the coolest nerd in New York!) As far as non-superpowered characters go, Mary Jane’s the girl we want to be, and now she’s doing laundry with her tits and thong sticking out.
Thanks a lot, Marvel.

UPDATE -
This story has blown up all over the internet - so far the bast article I’ve read is this one in the Toronto Star.
To the many people saying, “what’s wrong with a little sexiness? She’s a model anyway!” I’d like to say it’s more than that. It’s a reminder that within the world of comics - no matter what a character seems to stand for - this is really all women are seen as; and that comics aren’t for us, we don’t belong except as objects. It’s hard to be so disrespected by a world that means so much to a lot of us.

Don’t forget the pearl necklace. Real classy!

its just not cool to ogle another guys wife, i hear the model is being sold as his “lover”.
maybe they are sticking too close to the new movie story line and leaving the fanboy hardliners with the comics

If they wanted to stick to the movie, they’d have made her the mousy Kirsten Dunst with her sad little smile. No, this is a slap in the face to where women have come in such a long time. My STARS! If they wanted to really show a women doing laundry, at least let it be realistic… nasty sweats that she’s going to throw in once it starts… the only way you’ll see her in her underwear… and Mary Jane has never been this vamp pictured. She has been independent, and idealistic. She’s been a go getter and a show stopper… she has not been a trend follower, but a trend setter. It’s okay to be a housewife and that doesn’t take away from your sexiness or your strength as a woman, but it is not okay to say that this character is good for nothing but doing Spidey’s laundry, and the “action figure” we’re looking at says less of the first and more of the latter.

I’m sorry, ladies. I totally want this. If I buy it, I’ll make an equal donation to NOW, okay?

It’s simple. Girls don’t buy figures at anywhere near the rate men do. Men will buy more figures if there are boobs. Boobs = profit.
